Marvie specializes in helping individuals, couples, and families learn to understand their unique and hidden strengths, even those that sometimes present as barriers. Marvie works with clients to utilize these strengths to develop new skills and behaviors that help them to feel more empowered, to increase self-worth, to improve intrinsic motivation, and to feel healthy control over thoughts and feelings. Marvie has experience working in a variety of settings including: psychiatric inpatient, residential, partial hospitalization, intensive outpatient, community based centers, schools, and private practice.
Marvie has experience working with children, adolescents/young adults, and adults who have a wide range of concerns including: anxiety, depression, self-esteem, impulse control, stress management, and family or other relational conflict. Additionally, she has experience supporting and helping those with trauma, OCD, and attachment related symptoms. Marvie is trained in a wide variety of treatment approaches including: Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Dialectical Behavioral Therapy, Psychodynamic Therapy, Family Therapy, Internal Family Systems, Systemic Therapy, and expressive therapies (e.g. art and sand tray therapy).
Marvie says, “Learning to understand and utilize the strengths we already have can be life changing. I have an eclectic approach, meaning I am going to partner with my clients to determine their interests and to create a therapeutic plan. All of us deserve to feel empowered and to have the opportunity to realize our core strengths; even those that have been hidden by trauma or other challenges. I do all I can to help my clients achieve this in a way that is meaningful for them.”
When working with younger clients, Marvie believes strongly in the power of partnership and advocates that parental involvement is essential in treatment. Marvie understands that a child’s life includes many players, especially the family, but also teachers, coaches, and doctors. Marvie welcomes collaboration with each client’s team.
Marvie has also spent time as an Early Childhood Mental Health Consultant. She partnered with Childhood Development Centers in Montgomery County to support children presenting with developmental, emotional, and behavioral challenges. Her work centered on coaching parents, teachers, and educational leaders in the early development of social-emotional skills. This work incorporated 1:1 work with children, school observations, parent meetings, school meetings, IEP and 504 meetings, behavioral action plan creation, and linkages to services.
